I’ve decided to learn more about traditional Japanese Edo-period art by getting inspiration from the masters. One of my favorites is Ogata Korin (1658-1716), founder of the Rinpa (Rin school) and famous for his brightly hued, highly decorative works.
This painting is my “modernized” version of Korin’s “Akikonomuchugu-zu” (color painting on silk, 1701, 98.8x39cm, MOA Museum of Art). You can see Korin’s piece here.
Akikonomuchugu is a character in the ancient Japanese novel, The Tale of Genji. She’s a noblewoman whose favorite season was autumn, thus the name.

Here’s the work in progress:

I penciled then inked in the drawing, then added the first washes. My paper was small but it was fun painting the patterns on the kimono.
A close-up:

It’s perfect for writing calligraphy on the upper right hand side, like a traditional Japanese poem or proverb. I plan to put up prints enhanced digitally.
