I painted the background by doing a wash in light pink and then using natural sponge to add the violet and magenta splashes.

Inspiration: Gorgeous Roses at Kyu-Furukawa Garden

To create this piece I took inspiration from the gorgeous Hybrid Tea roses at Kyu-Furukawa Garden in Tokyo. The place used to be a private residence of the founder of Fujitsu, one of Japan’s largest conglomerates. It has since been turned into a house museum and garden open to the public.

Each Spring the roses burst into bloom, turning the mansion into one of the most beautiful houses in the city, and perhaps the most gloriously fragrant. Hundreds of rose varieties from around the world display their exquisite beauty in front of thousands of rose lovers in and around Tokyo. For the collages here I picked out the red and pink blooms only, though there are other brilliant hues that make for one elegantly colorful garden. (I’ll upload them once I’m done with their paintings! :))

I love this place in Spring. It’s almost magical, a fairy tale home where princesses and fairies and goblins seem to be just around the corner. Unfortunately, some visitors for reasons I cannot fathom like to grab the roses by the bloom and shove them under their noses, apparently to enjoy the fragrance. But dear me! You can see the damage done to the petals in some of the images above. My wish is for these rose maulers to be pricked by thorns!

The garden is quite barren in winter, so there really is no Blue Violet Winter Rose. Just in my imagination while I await the coming of Spring.
