Inspiration: Sunflowers in Summer
Sunflowers are such a joy to paint. I’m not surprised Van Gogh painted lots of them; they’re one of those botanical subjects that are hard to tire of. Each petal is like a bright sun ray, full of warmth and cheer.
Each year we visit the Oiwake-shimin-no-mori Park in Kanagawa, Japan, to see the sunflowers in summer (see collage below). There is an extra warmth to this place because the flowers are planted by volunteers, ordinary townspeople who like to add a dose of color to the neighborhood and spread some floral happiness for everyone else, including out-of-town visitors like us, to enjoy.
I like how both the petals and center are yellow. I think they’re either the Monet or Lemon Aura variety.
On the uppermost left are some sunflowers from Usuitoge in Gunma, Japan. These are the type with black brown centers.
For my painting I think it’s a mix of both the all-yellow variety and the standard dark-centered kind of sunflower.
