I used Golden Acrylic’s Fine Silver paint for the hearts, and used a silver glitter gel pen for the strings.

Inspiration: Klimt’s Tree of Life

My inspiration for this piece from Gustav Klimt’s “The Tree of Life, Stoclet Frieze” (1909). It’s such a gorgeous symbolic mural, with the luxurious gold tones Klimt became known for in his Late Works period.

I love the swirling branches of this Art Nouveau style work. The Tree of Life concept cuts across different cultures; it is one of those universal symbols with myriad interpretations. I like to think of this tree as the connection between heaven and earth, with its roots going deep into the ground while its branches stretch out into the sky. The blackbird on the branch is also full of meaning; I see it as a juxtaposition between the life-giving tree and the death-foretelling creature.

This painting is a study for a large mosaic series for a palace in Brussels. It is an oil on canvas mural currently housed at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. I do hope to see the actual artwork one day!
